Henry hing,
Don't worry lar, this lens is not that bad at all, here is a pic that I roughly took this morning on the bus on my way to work, the sharpness is really not that bad and saturation is ok too. I will do more test during lunch for you.
The only difference between yours and mine is that mine is AI mount, everything else should be the same. |

Happy shooting!

Good day joesphC bro
ths for yr feeling and advice
I do see there of course some diff between Nikkor and Zenitar lah,
however, what do u say HKD 4000 vs HKD 700.00 , that I bot from Cheong Gor's shop last early yr, one thing that it is also to fit with my Minolat D5D , I am fond of its colour effect
Last but not least, actaully it is pretty seldom use of this Lens.
Only just for fun , not to worry mate .

The point I was trying to make is to avoid using Zenitar 16mm above f8. In previous situations of the church shot I used f2.8 and the results are not acceptable. Also, you can see that the Nikon 16mm is much better from these photos (there is at least one shot from the same location). |

Dear Henry
I have taken some photos by Nikon 16mm MF previously. Just post them to see the difference . All photos were taken by hand-held with setting of ISO 640 + F.4 + 1/20.

I respect your testing of the Zenitar by a brave combination of exposure. I look forward to seeing you to extend the performance of the lens under a more favourable condition, such as sunny f8.

As I expected, you had been using it wide open. When I first use this lens, I tend to use it that way. Then I found that the whole frame is soft. When I first own this lens, I was limited by the speed of film. Now with dslr, I can stretch it. As in this example, I shot at f11 1/30 with a 350d at iso1600 underexposed by 2 stops. It was probably the limit of the camera/lens combination. I did not use a tripod as the people are moving anyway. It met my requirements and gave me a bonus of star-light effect on the candles. I did not use a filter and do not know how this came about.
In another example, you can see how f16 under sufficient light performed. I think this is a good lens for the price but the genuine Nikon or Canon 16mm are sharper at larger apertures.
Enjoy shooting. |

Can't see the aperture you were using from your photo but I think it was larger than 8. My experience with this lens is that you can only use 11 or 16 and occasionally 8. It gets soft at larger apertures. To take a night shot, you can consider pushing exposure compensation 1 or 2 stops down and lighten the picture later in software. Then you make it possible to use 11 or 16 with acceptable shutter speed. |
