The recording file is in transport stream with a .ts filename. On FAT32 drive, the files are split in 2G size, and in a single file on EXT2 drive.
The recording includes all the audio and subtitle tracks to select in playback. It will even remember the last selected audio and subtitle for each recording so you don't need to reselect when replay.
thomas tong hing, it's save to always plug in the power supply.

Li On |

Hi Li On

We suggest to use a USB harddrive with "auto Power On/Off" function. Some brand name USB harddrives we tested support the auto On/Off function, such as the Buffalo DriveStation, WD (Western Digital) My Book series, and Seagate FreeAgent series. If the USB harddrive support auto On/Off, then the USB harddrive should auto trun off when the MTV3000 finished recording and auto standby, and auto power on when the MTV3000 auto wake up when recording starts.
------------------------------------
One thing to consider when you buy these brand name HD.
As far as I know Bafallo use SATA drive, all others use ATA.
Though there is little difference using SATA or ATA drives with STB.
New models may be different. |

Hi,
If MTV3000 format the HD to ext2, does it mean that it can record in one file even if it is more than 10G?
What format is the recording file? (.trp or .ts or .mpg) |

Is MagicTV use Linux OS?
Some people enjoy to modify the firmware.
If user can custom their firmware,
or allow user add plug-in into MagicTV,
this will be very interesting. |

Hi Li On,
Could recorded program be played directly by PowerDVD in PC? |

Hi lawrenceli,
From the MTV3000 system level, there is no performance difference using FAT32 or EXT2 format. From the user point of view, program recorded on a FAT32 drive will be splited in 2G each file. And extra software/driver needed to install on Windows PC to view EXT2 drive.
The MTV3000 recording firmware does not support USB drive defragmentation. Generally, harddrive file fragmentation should not affect the digital TV recording and playback operation, as the transfer bitrate is actually very very low at around 0.4MB/s (3Mb/s) for SD channel and up to 1.5MB/s (13Mb/s) for HD channel, while a 3.5" harddrive can normally handle transfer rate at least 30MB/s and up. On the other hand, if you must keep the harddrive at the best condition, then you will need to manually perform defragmentation on PC.

Li On |

Hi Li On,
i have two questions here:
1. is there any performance difference between FAT32 and EXT2 filesystem?
2. does MTV-3000 support deframentation? Or I need to use Windows for FAT32 and Linux for EXT2 to mount the USB HDD to do deframentation?

Glee hing, we didn't test the lacie USB harddrive so we are not sure if it can support auto power on/off. The recording firmware supports 2 methods to turn on/off the USB harddrive:
- when the MTV3000 standby, it will send "spin-down" command to the USB drive, if the USB drive support the "spin-down" instruction, it should turn off/sleep
- when the MTV3000 standby, it will cut the USB port power, if the USB drive support USB port power detection, it should turn off
- when the MTV3000 wake up, it will send a "hot-plug" signal to the USB port, if the USB drive is in sleep/spin-down mode, it should wake up/spin up
- when the MTV3000 wake up, it will restore the USB port power, if the USB drive support USB port power detection, it should turn back on
If the USB drive does not support any of the above power on/off, spin down/up operation, then there is not much the MTV3000 can do to force the USB drive on/off...

Li On |

Justsimple hing, 2.5" USB harddrives tested, Verbatim 320G, Buffalo 120G, 3 generic DIY 2.5" USB harddirve cases. Must use a 1-to-2 USB cable to connect to the MTV3000. The 2.5" USB harddrives work in our test but we are not sure if there may be problem in long term usage. We recommand 3.5" USB harddrive for the most stable operation.

Added: How to access (read/write) MTV3000 Formatted (EXT2 Format) USB harddrive in Windows PC? On the PC, please install a EXT2 driver for Windows, such as http://www.fs-driver.org/
Tomorrow (Friday), hopefully, We will try to release a firmware update for the MTV3000 with USB harddrive recording function, for user to have fun with recording over the weekend! This firmware will have some software bugs and may not function 100% perfect. Please treat it as a "beta" release! After we collect feedback from users, we will release a update version ASAP.
With the recording firmware, it can directly record to a FAT32 harddrive, or it can "format" a USB drive in EXT2 format up to 500G.
Generally we recommand a 3.5" USB harddrive with standalone power supply to use on the MTV3000. We also tested a few 2.5" USB harddrive size from 80G to 320G. Those 2.5" USB harddrives also work with the MTV3000 recording, with a "1 USB (harddrive) to 2 USB (MTV3000) cable" for the MTV3000 to supply enough power to the 2.5" USB harddrive. But we can NOT make sure all 2.5" harddrive can work on the MTV3000.
Please post any question about the upcoming MTV3000 recording firmware here! Thanks in advance.
regards,
Li On
