I have been using my MTV3000 since July 2008.
About 1 year later, the remote control doesn't work as good as before and I have to press some buttons a few time to trigger it.
About 2 months ago, the AC/DC adaptor didn't work and I bought an aftermarket one.
On Christmas day this year, the last common defect showed up. Yes, it's the fan/cooler.
Yesterday, I bought a replacement one with the same type of plugs but 3 wires (red, black & yellow).
I think the yellow one is for kind of speed control (correct me if not quite). I plugged it in without disconnecting the yellow wire.
I guess the PCB does not have this contact point connected, right? Is it fine to leave it? Or I better cut it off?
Thanks in advance for confirming this issue.

>第一次插落去冇反應...咁我將正負調轉

That was your problem - one of the time you tried had reversed the polarity of the power supplied to the STB and that probably blew your STB.

Dear P.Yeung 兄,

我新買既火牛係 Super TP60
DC Output:12/13/13.8/15/16/18/19v
-Continuous
Loading:7.0Amp
-Suitable for AC100-240V

Input: AC100-240v 1.8A 50-60Hz , Output : DC 12,13V == 7.0A , 13.8V,15V === 6.0A

Did you check the polarity of the plug of the power supply matched the original? Reversed polarity might blow your STB.

Using a power supply with a higher amperage rating should not cause any problem. It was either the output voltage of your power supply was too high or your STB was already on the blink of self-destruction before hooking up to the new power supply.

換返之前冇事既火牛都開唔返機了...點算?

刪除檔案後請等待HDD燈號停止閃動後才關機,十個檔案需等待約需一小時。(每個檔案約45分鐘)

Li On兄,

As indicated earlier on, when I delete more recorded programs from hard disk, the available space did not increase. On the contrary, the more files I delete, the less space I can recover from the hard disk.

I finally understand the root cause for this problem. When I detach the hard disk from the MagicTV and connect it to my laptop for examination, I discovered one very strange thing. I actually notice that a lot of the programs I thought I have deleted (with the Rubbish Bin subsquently cleared) are still in the "ts" folder. Yes, the deleted programs are still in the "ts" folders even they are not visible on the menu of the MagicTV. To my surprise, some of the programs that are supposed to removed days (or even weeks) ago are still there. I am pretty sure that I have deleted these programs and removed them from the Rubbish Bin as I have the habit of clearing the Rubbish Bin every two days.

Is this a known firmware bug or just the problem of my own faulty hard disk? Has anyone experienced/reported such a problem?

Li On "Hing",

Thanks very much for your prompt reply.

1. Regarding the "Check and Repair" function, I have used it and it works for the time being. However, it seems that the disk space that is "losted" previously cannot be recovered. It only manage to fuction properly AFTER the "Check and Repair". I guess I have to reformat the hard disk later if I want to recover the losted space!

2. In relation to the formatting of the new 2T, I have waited a whopping 15 mins between 89% to 100%. As for 0% to 89%, it only takes around 4 mins. Accordingly, the time scale is not exactly linear. The good thing is that it finally gets the job done and complete the format of the hard disk. However, I guess the average MTV users should be warned about this special "situation".

hi Higo, please do a "check and repair" on the USB HDD. It should clear up the problem.

For the 2TB HDD format, yes it will stay in around 90% for up to a few minutes. Please wait and let it finish.

regards,

Li On

Dear MTV users,

I recently bought a new MTV3200D. It works fine for the first 2 weeks. However, some strange things happened since yesterday and I am not sure if it is a firmware problem or a hard disk failure:-

1. Since my 500G (EXT formatted) hard disk was nearly full, I began to delete some of the programs recorded early and clear the Rubbish Bin. However, in doing so, the MTV and the hard disk behaved “irrationally”. For example, when I first deleted 4 programs, I freed up 4 hours worth of recording time. When I further deleted another 5 programs, the available time for recording had actually dropped to 2 hours (from 4 hours). This did not make sense as one would expect the more programs you had deleted, the more space would be available! I am sure I have deleted all these 9 programs and cleared the Rubbish Bin.

2. I replaced my 500G hard disk with a brand new 2T Buffalo hard disk. I plugged in the 2T hard disk to the MTV and attempted to use the MTV built-in function to format the hard disk. All went very well but it stopped when the status bar reached 89% formatted. I did try four more times without success – the formatting went smoothly at first each time it stopped at 89%. I first suspected that there was something wrong with the brand new 2T hard disk. However, when I formatted the hard disk to a NTFS hard disk under Windows, it did not have any problem at all.

Any user experienced the above problems?

By the way, is it possible to format a NTFS formatted hard disk to EXT3 under the Windows environment?

Many thanks in advance.

Thanks! I will try it with the MTV3200's power supply. By the way, which power supply suits the MTV3000?

Red light in the power supply means that it is still alive but doesn't mean it is well.

Just go and buy yourself a new power supply. It is what it is!

Everyone who has used a MTV3000 have had to buy a new power supply upon using it for year or more.

Added: How to access (read/write) MTV3000 Formatted (EXT2 Format) USB harddrive in Windows PC? On the PC, please install a EXT2 driver for Windows, such as http://www.fs-driver.org/

Tomorrow (Friday), hopefully, We will try to release a firmware update for the MTV3000 with USB harddrive recording function, for user to have fun with recording over the weekend! This firmware will have some software bugs and may not function 100% perfect. Please treat it as a "beta" release! After we collect feedback from users, we will release a update version ASAP.

With the recording firmware, it can directly record to a FAT32 harddrive, or it can "format" a USB drive in EXT2 format up to 500G.

We suggest to use a USB harddrive with "auto Power On/Off" function. Some brand name USB harddrives we tested support the auto On/Off function, such as the Buffalo DriveStation, WD (Western Digital) My Book series, and Seagate FreeAgent series. If the USB harddrive support auto On/Off, then the USB harddrive should auto trun off when the MTV3000 finished recording and auto standby, and auto power on when the MTV3000 auto wake up when recording starts.

Generally we recommand a 3.5" USB harddrive with standalone power supply to use on the MTV3000. We also tested a few 2.5" USB harddrive size from 80G to 320G. Those 2.5" USB harddrives also work with the MTV3000 recording, with a "1 USB (harddrive) to 2 USB (MTV3000) cable" for the MTV3000 to supply enough power to the 2.5" USB harddrive. But we can NOT make sure all 2.5" harddrive can work on the MTV3000.

Please post any question about the upcoming MTV3000 recording firmware here! Thanks in advance.

regards,

Li On
